PHILIPSBURG:--- On Monday, July 1, the Philipsburg Jubilee Library and the National Heritage Foundation will join forces with the Philipsburg Cultural & Community Center in presenting the opening of the Art Exhibition "Ancestral History", from 11:00am – 11:30am.
As St. Maarten's Emancipation Day Celebrations draws closer, the organizing committee for the historical exhibition comprised of: Library representatives Monique Alberts (Director) and Morenika Arrindell (Public Relations Officer/ Activity Manger); Heritage Foundation Director, Elsje Bosch and Cultural Center representative Urmain " Youmay" Dormoy, pooled their combined resources together, to shape the ancestral history exhibition.
An exhibition on slavery and emancipation compiled by the the Special Collections department of the University of Amsterdam will also be on display at the Cultural Center. This exhibition, aimed at youngsters, consists of two sets of banners. One set is compiled by the Surinamese comedian Raymann and his daughter and depicts historical objects relating to slavery. The other set tells the story of slavery through texts, maps and pictures.
These two sets of banners will also be on display at selected libraries of Aruba, Curacao, and Surinam during the month of July.
The National Heritage Foundation has made their collection of artifacts and literature relevant to the emancipation day celebrations, available to the Cultural Center for display for the duration of the exhibition.
The general public is invited to view the exhibition on ancestral history on July 1, 2013, from 2:00pm – 6:00pm and also during the course of the week at the Cultural Center.
