MARIGOT:--- Swift work and joint cooperation between the Territorial Police and the Gendarmes led to the arrest of nine persons who entered St. Martin illegally. A press release from the Gendarmerie states that around 1:30am Friday morning the Police Territorial spotted an unusual amount of persons disembarking on the waterfront next to the ferry station. The persons were seen on a video surveillance camera that covers most of Marigot.
According to the press release, when these persons were spotted the gendarmes were notified and two Gendarmes went to the scene where they found nine persons that entered the island illegally. Seven of the nine persons are from Cuba, one St. Lucian, and a Martinican that came off from a small boat. The seven Cuban nationals had on them a bag with their personal items, large sums of monies (both US dollars and Euros), and their identifications. The monies were carefully wrapped in plastic mostly to prevent it from getting wet.
Currently, the Police Aux Frontiers (PAF) are busy conducting an investigation on the entry of the illegal aliens that entered the French territory. As such St. Martin was given full permission to continue with the judicial inquiry to determine and gather all the information on the transport of the persons caught early Friday morning.
