PHILIPSBURG:--- During a recent Parliamentary debate I stated that were it pertains to remarks made by Members of the 2nd Chamber of the Netherlands, these remarks are almost certain to be carried front page by our two Daily papers. I have also stated that the Bosman law as presented by this member of the 2nd chamber reeks of discrimination against persons from Aruba, Curacao and St. Maarten who holds the same Dutch Nationality as persons from Bonaire. St. Eustatius and Saba. In addition the Dutch Constitution only recognizes one Dutch Nationality and no distinction can be made based on the country of origin of those who would like to reside in the Netherlands. In fact no distinction can also be made based on race, social status, ethnicity or any other matter as such.
The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) of the Council of Europe in a recent report advised the Dutch government that this law if adopted will cause unequal treatment based on ethnicity and urges the Dutch Government to withdraw this law proposal.
The Council also advises the Dutch Government to explore positive measures that may be needed to address persons coming from Aruba, Curacao and St. Maarten that encounter problems of a social nature, involved with criminality or persons that go to the Netherlands for the so called social support and to make sure that these persons if they reside in the Netherlands or on one of these 3 islands that they may benefit from these positive measures.
The Council states that Aruba, Curacao and St. Maarten cannot be seen as separate countries from the Netherlands, whereby restrictive measures are instituted to prohibit the free movement of people. These recommendations were given by the Council in its 4th annual country report pertaining to racism in the Member State the Netherlands. It is strange to me that the two local daily's that does extensive internet research on matters pertaining to issues surrounding the relationship between the Netherlands and Aruba, Curacao and or St. Maarten failed to carry this so important conclusion from the
The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance of the Council of Europe (ECRI). Or isn't this story juicy and negative enough to be carried on the front pages of our two daily newspapers. For further research one may visit the below site.
