PHILIPSBURG:--- Reporters tried to get Minister of Health, Labor and Social Affairs Dr. Cornelius de Weever to say whether or not he will be contesting the 2014 Parliamentary elections. In responding to the question Minister de Weever said that as a professional Minister who was appointed to office by the Democratic Party he is not focusing on politics because that will distract him from his duties. The leader of at least one political party has claimed that Dr. De Weever will be contesting the elections on his slate.
However, SMN News has been reliably informed that the brother of the Minister (Miguel de Weever) is busy preparing to be a candidate in the upcoming elections. The source said that Miguel de Weever was planning to run on the National Alliance slate in 2010 but backed out when he was pressured by other family members because his uncle was running on the Democratic Party slate.
The source said that while Miguel de Weever is preparing for the elections, he is still to decide on which list he will run. It is highly likely that De Weever will run on the UP or USP list depending which one is more feasible to him.
In the meantime, leader of the Democratic Party Sarah Wescot Williams made clear on Wednesday during the Council of Ministers' weekly press briefing that her party will not be looking for quantity instead they will focus on quality candidates to participate on the DP slate for the 2014 elections. Wescot Williams said it is likely that the DP will not submit a full slate of 21 for the upcoming elections.
