Discussion, new book launch with Lasana Sekou and Fabian Badejo
GREAT BAY/MARIGOT:--- The 27th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture, organized by Conscious Lyrics Foundation (CLF), takes place at Philipsburg Jubilee Library, on Wednesday, January 15, at 8 PM.
"A Revolution of Values..." – from a Dr. King quote – is the theme of this year's program, formatted as a discussion and new book launch by Lasana Sekou and Fabian Badejo, said CLF president Shujah Reiph.
The book is Maroon Lives – Tribute to Maurice Bishop & Grenadian Freedom Fighters by Lasana M. Sekou; Revolution As Poetic Inspiration: Grenada in 'Maroon Lives' by Fabian Adekunle Badejo. "I'm very interested in seeing how the writers will make the lecture theme relevant to ideas and actions in today's St. Martin and in our relationship with the wider world," said Reiph.
Badejo and Sekou will read from Maroon Lives after which Dr. Rhoda Arrindell will moderate the discussion with both authors, said Reiph. The MLK lecture has been an annual opener of the island's cultural calendar for a number of years – with speakers from St. Martin, from throughout the Caribbean and the USA.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture takes place on January 15, the birthday anniversary of the world renowned US civil rights leader, said Reiph. The lecture is usually alternated between both capitals of the island "to honor and continually inspire the traditional unity in all of the people of St. Martin," said Reiph.
Reiph will also introduce the MLK lecture theme on "Let's Talk About It," his new SOS Radio talkshow, live on 95.9 FM, Monday, January 13, at 6 PM, with guests Sekou and Badejo.
The SOS radio show will feature a tribute to Amiri Baraka, the recently deceased US author/activist. Baraka, who lectured and published in St. Martin on two occasions, had himself met and discussed freedom and development issues with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X in the 1960s, said Reiph.
"The talkshow and the Dr. King lecture are free for everyone to attend, over the SOS airwaves on Monday, and in person at Philipsburg Jubilee Library on Wednesday," said Reiph.
