SOUTH REWARD:--- A group of students of the St. Dominic High School would like to thank the public of St. Maarten for their support during the Christmas holidays as they sought donations to fund their trip to The Netherlands. A special thank you goes to the manager of Klass Electronics for sponsoring all the materials and for rendering the work space.
The students, in collaboration with Klass Electronics, participated in the annual 'gift wrapping for a cause' activity, an ongoing event for the past nine years. The collected funds are usually given to a charity or a non-profit organization on St. Maarten, but this year, the students collected donations to aid them in their 'Kansproject trip' to The Netherlands in February.
Many persons gave generously towards this worthy cause and the students are very grateful.
They have collected $ 1,560 during the Christmas break and this money will help them tremendously as they have been working very hard selling meals in the school's canteen to reach their target goal of $5,000,- . They are still working on obtaining this goal in the little time that they have left before their trip. This trip means a lot to them as they are quite interested in meeting the students who they have been corresponding with online. Once in The Netherlands, they will go to school and stay at the homes of these students and their families.
The Kansproject is a two-year program, guided by the European Platform in the Netherlands, which aims to connect students and teachers from different countries. Teachers and students from both schools carry out various projects that help to improve language proficiency, teaching skills and the use of technology. In the first year of the project, teachers got the chance to visit and teach in the Netherlands as well as on St. Maarten. In the second year of the project, students receive the chance to visit a school in the Netherlands and partake in the Dutch culture and educational system for one week.
The students are quite excited and we thank all those who have dedicated time and funds towards this project.
