PHILIPSBURG:--- The University of St. Martin(USM) will continue with its 2014 spring semester lecture series with the upcoming lecture entitled "Before you Postulate, Educate". This lecture will be presented by former State Secretary of Justice and General Affairs and Member of the Parliament of the Netherlands Antilles, Mr. Marcel Gumbs. The lecture is scheduled for Thursday February 27th, 2014 7:00pm- 9:00pm in the USM Lecture Hall.
The purpose of the lecture is to inform budding politicians on how to best prepare for a political career. Gumbs said he had been approached by multiple persons in the community to share information on this topic and thought that it will be best to address these requests in form of a lecture in an academic setting. Mr. Gumbs notes that it is important for potential politicians to know the basics such as: the Constitution, existing legislations such as the electoral laws and the law on campaign financing and also the effects of a political career on personal and family life". Anecdotes on the Political career of Mr. Gumbs will also be shared.
USM finds it very significant to host this lecture in an election year as it gives content to the quality of the electoral process. They are in the process of organizing a political debate series as well, which should commence in the near future. USM further points out that this lecture and all upcoming lectures of political nature are solely for educational purposes and not affiliated with any political party.
