Several reports of bank card skimming reported last week.

bankcardfraud13062014MARIGOT:--- Several persons living in Saint-Martin suffered fraudulent withdrawals of their bank accounts during the past week. An investigation was opened by the police of St. Martin regarding this issue. Initial investigations show that these fraudulent withdrawals were made using the technique of "skimming"; criminals manipulate controllers or payment terminals (ATMs, terminals  payment in shops, service stations, restaurants, etc ...) with technical equipment placed on PLCs or nearby for copying the data contained on the magnetic stripe of the card and the code.
Faced with this phenomenon the police offers the following recommendations:

  • Make sure the ATM you use payment has not been changes (Keyboard, card reader, screen);
  • Hide keyboard with one hand when you enter your code on the keypad distributor (this code is sometimes copied through a miniature camera arranged close to the ATM);
  • Regularly check your bank statements to determine if suspicious transactions therein.

In the event of fraudulent use or withdrawal, victims are encouraged to come to the gendarmerie to report the facts, if possible, by providing it with a copy of a bank statement showing the fraudulent transaction.
