CUL DE SAC:--- St. Maarten Academy CAPE students travelled to the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School in Anguilla on Monday, February 16, 2015 as part of a one day workshop to allow students to attend classes and interact with students who are doing the CAPE programme in Anguilla.
Nine students and four teachers participated in this initiative where students actually sat and worked in a CAPE class and also got to speak to the other CAPE students so that they were able to hear from their peers at that level what is required of them. The CAPE students pursued Pure Mathematics, Accounting, Communication Studies, and Information Technology units and were fully immersed and engaged in these classes
"The St. Maarten Academy is mindful of the fact that these are the first set of students doing this programme so they do not have anyone to turn to who may tell them what to expect and how to go about navigating the waters and we felt that if they heard from other students and attended CAPE classes they may be better able to understand what is required of them," said CAPE Coordinator, Ms. Roxanne Bloomfield.
The Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School in Anguilla, led by Principal, Ms. Ingrid Lake was receptive to the idea of having this interaction and so a CAPE trip to the high school was organized. Principal Lake and her team of CAPE teachers were invaluable in this process. The teachers were wonderful to work with as they ensured that the students from St. Maarten Academy were fully engaged in the learning process.
St. Maarten Academy, under the guidance of the Foundation for Academic and Vocational Education (FAVE) emerged in 1974 as the first secondary school with English as the language of instruction. The St. Maarten Academy is the first school on the island to introduce CAPE programme of study.
"We believe that it would be a great offering to the population of St. Maarten as the programme seeks to offer a Caribbean Associate Degree in three areas: Natural Sciences, Business Studies and General Studies," Bloomfield stated.
"We take advantage of every opportunity we have to expose students to what is expected at CAPE," said Academy Principal, drs. Tallulah Baly-Vanterpool. "In April, we are planning a similar trip for the CAPE Science students, this time to the Commonwealth of Dominica," said Baly-Vanterpool.
Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) is one of the programmes offered by the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC). It is a post-secondary degree programme that has been in existence for over 16 years.
