Transferable skills to be highlighted at “Crafting a Resume” workshop
PHILIPSBURG – “Resumes have become a common way of introducing yourself as prospective employer to employers and that is why it is important that this document is properly reflective of you, your skills, and experiences,” say Student Support Services Division (SSSD) officials.
This statement was made in relation to the upcoming “Crafting a Resume” workshop hosted by SSSD for students in their last two years of school or those who recently completed secondary school. This free workshop is scheduled to be held on June 22, 2015 at SSSD’s office from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
According to SSSD officials, not all students graduating high school are leaving the island to continue their studies or leaving immediately after graduation and these graduates need to be properly equipped with the knowledge to get jobs. The workshops will be conducted by SSSD’s Career Guidance Counselors Mr. Michel Chance and Ms. Sanjana Manek.
“Many students have transferable skills or skills/knowledge acquired from the classes they took but they have difficulties highlighting these in their resumes. With this workshop, this aspect will be highlighted,” SSSD officials noted.
This is the second year that this workshop is being offered. SSSD officials added that in the “Crafting a Resume” workshop participants will learn how to list their educational background information and skills in a presentable and professional way so they can get noticed by employers. This workshop will also help participants sharpen their resume writing skills in order for them to showcase their skills and abilities to potential employers. Participants will also create their own draft resume during the workshop. If participants already have a draft resume, they are encouraged to bring copies to the workshop so these can be improved.
Since space is limited, persons interested attending the workshop are urged to register at SSSD for such.
Workshop participants are also urged to be on time. Participants are also urged to bring their own writing utensils. If parents or students have any questions on these workshops, they can contact the Student Support Services Division at telephone 543-1235 for more information.
