PHILIPSBURG:--- In December 2015 Mobile Operator TelCell filed a complaint at St. Maarten’s Telecom Regulator Bureau Telecommunications and Post St. Maarten (BTP) concerning potential interference that is affecting their Mobile Network and causing difficulties to their customers in using data services and making and receiving mobile calls.
BTP is responsible for the management of Spectrum in St. Maarten, and took immediate action by further investigating the complaint. In the past weeks several measurements were conducted in the UMTS bands, and the preliminary results indicate that TELEM could be facing interfering signals from both St. Kitts and the French side.
In order to resolve, BTP shared the preliminary measurement results with NTRC & ANFR - the regulatory authorities of above mentioned countries-, and full cooperation is giving. Both regulators indicated that the proper regulatory steps will be taken to come to a resolution as soon as possible.
Director of BTP Mr. Carty stated: “we are working diligently with different stake holders to resolve matters, but want to remind the general public that spectrum management and -coordination can be very challenging in our territories because of the close proximity of neighboring island, and due to ongoing changes on mobile networks. By conducting frequent measurements, doing proper management of frequency bands, and establishing and maintaining good working relationships with regulators across the region, BTP is making ongoing efforts to minimize spectrum related issues that negatively affects the Quality of Service in the telecom industry”.
