MECYS promises a fun packed weekend for all
PHILIPSBURG:--- Events leading up to St. Martin Day 2017 continues this weekend with the debut of the Hurricane Heroes Social with Fred York and Friends at Laser 101. We all can agree that Laser 101 played a vital role in the days after Hurricane Irma and at one point was the main source of communication for many on the island and abroad. Therefore, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport in collaboration with Musicologie, spearheaded by Fred York, finds it befitting to kick off the Hurricane Heroes Social by honoring the management and staff of Laser 101. The event will be held this Saturday, October 28th, 2017 from 6pm to 9pm at the Laser 101 parking lot. The Ministry is encouraging everyone to come out and have fun while honoring one of our Hurricane Heroes.
There will also be the #SXMSTRONG Sports Knockout tournament consisting of Basketball, Football, Volleyball and Dominoes on Saturday, October 28th and Sunday, October 29th from 9am to 5pm at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex. Ending the weekend is the #SXMSTRONG Family Fun Day at the playground of the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex. There will be music and games for families to enjoy and participate in. Funtopia will also be at the Family Fun Day with a bouncing castle, face painting, mascots and snow cones for kids to enjoy at a low cost to all. Funtopia will then donate all proceeds to a worthy cause for the youth of St. Maarten.
The events leading up to and including St. Martin Day 2017 is a unified effort between the Dutch and French Government. The Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Ms. Silveria Jacobs and Madame First Vice President Ms. Valerie Damaseau has pledged their full support in organizing St. Martin Day 2017 together. A workgroup has been formed with representatives from both sides to ensure unified coordination of all events. There are many more events to come and we encourage the public to stay tuned for more information.
