PHILIPSBURG:---St. Maarten has talent! Now what? One cannot simply acknowledge there is beauty and do nothing about. Talents must be nurtured and supported – only then can we experience the full grandeur of it's excellence,” says Julie Alcin, a local artists who is working together with fellow artists to create Soualiga Untapped - a platform dedicated to promoting the artists of St. Maarten. Along side her are the members of Focal Length Studios – Keverne Arthur, Ian Soriano, and Chano DeWeever – Leatton Douglas (dancer), Crystal Blackett (Funtopian), and Erwin Romney (graffiti artist). Currently, their project consist of three parts:
Soualiga Untapped – Video Series: Wherein 50 artists. will be interviewed about their journey through the arts. The goal is to highlight: the importance of the arts, how to properly support local artists, the contributions of artists to society, misconceptions, and the struggles of artists. Interviews will start in October.
Soualiga Untapped – Anthology: The anthology will be a compilation of biographies, photographs, written materials, and artworks. Artists are asked to send in written work such as poems, letters, stories, song lyrics, essays, articles or/and art work such as digital art, drawings, paintings, and photography. Written materials should be maximum 1000 words and sent in doc or docx format, and images are to be in JPEG. all works are to be signed and submitted with a biography before October 30th, 2018. Artists are allowed to give in 5 submissions of any art form previously mentioned.
Soualiga Untapped – More Than Just M-Androids: For this project, they are looking for young artists, age 25 and younger, to help prove that the younger generations are “more than just mindless robots stuck to their technology, and are bright minds interested in creating a colourful world”. The aim of this project is to highlight the brilliance of the youth, display how technology can be used as a creative tool, and highlight the contributions of young artists.
In addition, Soualiga Untapped is searching for content creators for their website: www.soualigauntapped.wordpress.com. This will be an opportunity to promote your craft while simultaneously uplifting and supporting other artists of St. Maarten.
