PHILIPSBURG:--- The White and Yellow Cross Care Foundation (WYCCF) in St. Maarten and The Rotary Club of Anguilla is expressing gratitude to the Caribbean Lottery, for the collective donation of US $7,093.02 towards philanthropic projects for 2021.
Funds donated to WYCCF will be used primarily to develop two sensory rooms and a sensory garden at the facility to aid in the care of residents who are ailing from dementia, while the financial support to The Rotary Club of Anguilla will be used to assist community members who are in need, thereby furthering the Rotary’s economic and community development agenda.
WYCCF offers several care products for persons who suffer from dementia, such as their nursing home and the daycare for persons with a psychogeriatric diagnosis. In the daycare, 20 clients who live at home spend Monday through Friday in a therapeutic environment where activities take place that fit their interests and diagnoses.
As many persons who suffer from dementia lose their cognitive skills (such as clear/logical thinking and speaking), making contact via their senses is a therapeutic and beneficial intervention. For this purpose, the WYCCF foundation requested a donation to purchase different sensory materials to create a special room in both their daycare and nursing home.
In addition, the donation will be used to create a sensory garden at WYCCF. Such a garden will help many of the clients with dementia to enjoy nice smells, and touch and see colorful flowers and butterflies. As the daycare has a spacious fenced-in garden, this can be landscaped into a special sensory environment for not only the daycare clients to enjoy but also for those that reside in the WYCCF Nursing Home and Elderly Care unit.
Mrs. Bregje Boetekees, Operations Manager for WYCCF, expressed her deep appreciation to the Caribbean Lottery for their role in helping the Foundation “realize many opportunities that will now become a reality.”
In a similar fashion, Secretary of the Rotary Club of Anguilla Mrs. Carolyn Richardson-Hodge expressed gratitude to the Caribbean Lottery for its generous contribution towards Rotary’s economic and community development projects. Pointing to the club’s motto, Service Above Self, and this year’s presidential theme, “Serve to Change Lives”, Mrs. Richardson-Hodge said, “We hope that this donation will assist us in fulfilling this objective of Rotary.”
Ms. Paula Williams, Site Manager for the Caribbean Lottery in both St. Maarten and Anguilla stated, “We are pleased to maintain our support of the work of both WYCCF and The Rotary Club of Anguilla. Seniors at WYCCF have contributed greatly to the development of St. Maarten and deserve the best of care, with focus on their quality of life. Likewise, the people who will benefit from the community projects of the Rotary Club of Anguilla are our fellow citizens who need a helping hand and we are pleased to extend the same to them, especially in this tough economic climate.”
These two donations are the latest of several such initiatives undertaken by the Caribbean Lottery in the Caribbean islands they operate.
