PHILIPSBURG:--- Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunset launched its sixth Free Little Library on the island at the recently built Community Spaces Project in Ebenezer Estate in the presence of The Ebenezer Community Council Foundation representative, Alexander Henrietta, and members of the club. This installation was made possible through the kind sponsorship of the Rotary Club of St. Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas.
The concept of the Little Free Library was initially introduced in 2009 by Rotarian Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin and the idea quickly spread throughout thousands of communities in the United States, with the goal of creating awareness on the importance of literacy. The Little Free Library is certainly not a new one for the island of St. Martin, as Rotary Sunset initially introduced the first little free library in December 2018 with its initial launch on the Marigot Waterfront. In addition, Rotary Sunset now has free little libraries located at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex, Simpson Bay Community Center, University of St. Martin, and the Martin Luther King Dr. Primary School. The objective of the little free library is mainly to advocate the importance of reading and to promote literacy, a key area of focus for Rotary clubs worldwide.
“We are extremely excited to launch yet another free little library in the Ebenezer Estate community. Special appreciation is extended to President Elita Bradshaw and the members of the Rotary Club of Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas for sponsoring the entire little library and supporting our vision in promoting the importance of reading throughout the island. Today, we are also grateful for the support given to us by the members of the Ebenezer Community Council Foundation for reaching out to the club and requesting a free little library at the park. We are certain that it will be put to good use and the children and adults alike will take good care of it”, Rotary Sunset’s President, Norrisa Anatol stated.
“The Ebenezer Community Council Foundation and the residents of Ebenezer Estate are very appreciative of this addition to our community”, Ebenezer Community Council Representative, Alexander Henrietta commented.
Henrietta and Anatol symbolically cut the ribbon to officially declare the free little library open to the public while members of Rotary Sunset and spectators looked on in excitement.
The Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunset would like to also extend appreciation to Woods Workshop for their contribution to the construction of the free little library. The general public is encouraged to pass by the free little library, take a book and leave a book. Members of the community are urged to donate books they are no longer using to either of the club’s little libraries.
The Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunset meets every second and fourth Monday of the month at Carl N Sons Unique Inn and Conference Facilities in Cole Bay at 7:30 pm.
