PHILIPSBURG:--- The Funtopia Youth Initiative Foundation is in the final stages of preparing for MokoFest, which is slated to be the largest Afro-Caribbean Cultural Festival on St. Martin. This event will be held at the Emilio Wilson Park on Sunday 3rd July 2022 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. A part of their cultural awareness campaign is to educate the general public about the Soualigan Giant Moko Jumbies, who will be taking the forefront of the event.
From the 75 entries received the Foundation is happy to announce the winners of the logo and poetry competition these amazing young people will be awarded at the Mokofest event. The general public is invited to come and enjoy the full day's program and see some of the entries that will be on display at the event and enjoy the days' program.
The winners of the creation of the Soualigan Giants logo competition are 12-year-old Nathannia Golden and second place recognition 19 – year old Leonna David who submitted beautiful Digital designs, which included recognizable symbolism that will now represent the Soualigan tribe of Moko Jumbies.
The winners of the poetry competition are 14-year-old Ajani Blake from Learning Unlimited Preparatory School and 9-year-old Diya Asrani from St. Joseph school, who captured the essence of what a Soualigan Giant represents. The judges for both competitions were Dion Gumbs, Charisse Piper, and Magueda Jackson.
The foundation would like to extend a profound thank you to the teachers and parents that supported their students and children in participating in this initiative. It was a great initiative where we can see some of the participants really took their time to research and discover what moko jumbie and Soualiga represent and that was the ultimate goal to bring more awareness to the movement.
