Total Theater – Art with a purpose
National Institute of Arts starts a new program in March 2023,
info-session this Saturday - March 4th, 12 PM at NIA
Growing up in St. Maarten can be very demanding, especially with the recent, possibly traumatic, events such as hurricane Irma and the pandemic. It is important to prepare the youth for such events. Multiple skills are learned in school, but participating in the arts can take one’s ability to deal with life in general even further.
The Total Theater program which starts in March 2023 and will run for at least 1 year, provides a playful and safe outlet, an opportunity to connect at a deeper level with peers, while guided by professional teachers. It provides an opportunity to develop, playfully, important skills that are transferable to everyday life, like critical thinking, a flexible mindset, curiosity, and problem-solving skills. Students are mentored on a weekly basis to improve their social-emotional development and -support.
This program is funded by R4CR since many families are still suffering the effects of Irma and the pandemic, and the financial means don’t always allow for extra-curricular and holistic activities. NIA offers this program without any costs because we believe that the arts should be accessible to all children and youth in St. Maarten. No child should be left behind and everyone should be treated equally and be able to receive the same possibilities.
Total Theater creates a space where all elements of the visual and performing arts can take place simultaneously, so students will participate in all classes that include acting, singing, dancing, improvisation, and stagecraft.
The interdisciplinary classes will be taking place on Saturdays at NIA in Philipsburg and at the art studio in Cay Hill:
12PM – 4PM 7 – 11 years
1PM – 6PM 12- 16 years
12PM – 6PM 17 & up
If you are interested in this program, or if you want to register yourself or your child, you are invited to come to the info session on March 4th at the National Institute of Arts on Longwall Road #20. All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by at least 1 parent. For more information, please contact 520-0444.
