irionislandpreneur10122023PHILIPSBURG:---  Held throughout November, now officially decreed by law as Financial Literacy Month, the SXM Financial Literacy Month surpassed expectations with more than 300 participants, including walk-ins. Islandpreneur and the Ministry of Finance are thrilled to announce the successful completion of this groundbreaking initiative aimed at bolstering financial knowledge and resilience within the community.
The month-long program featured a series of 10 comprehensive workshops, with 'Intro to Investment and Stocks' and 'Personal Budgeting' emerging as the most popular. The overwhelming response to these sessions led to the addition of extra classes to accommodate the growing interest.
Other workshops and activities included Money Mindset with Ms. Vee; Faith & Finance; Financial Resilience and Climate Change with President of Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten, Mr. Richard Doornbosch; Home Ownership with First Caribbean International Bank, Notary Richards, and Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment, and Infrastructure; Family & Finance Fun Day, Fireside chat with our international guests, Burunda Prince, COO of Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs, the largest incubator for black businesses in the US, Aly Merrit, the director of the 4th Largest tech hub in the US, Atlanta Tech Village, and Charles Robinson, a venture capitalist; Storytelling with Digital Island; and Taxation Explained with the Tax Department.
This pioneering effort was a collaborative effort of Islandpreneur and the Ministry of Finance with esteemed partners such as the Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten, FirstCaribbean International Bank, Kidszone Shop 4 Less, and TelEm Group. Their collective support was instrumental in the event's unprecedented success.
The initiative's primary goal was to build greater financial resilience, empowering individuals to take control of their financial futures. By equipping the community with essential financial knowledge, the program aimed to contribute to economic growth, reduce vulnerabilities and financial exploitation, and prepare individuals better for the future. For this reason, November has been decreed by law as St. Maarten’s National Financial Literacy Month, championed by the Minister of Finance, Ardwell Irion. It has also been embedded within the Ministry the to ensure its continuity.
The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing appreciation for the opportunity to enhance their financial literacy in a supportive and informative environment.
The Ministry of Finance and Islandpreneur extends its heartfelt thanks to all partners, speakers, and participants who made this event a landmark success. Plans are already underway to make next year's Financial Literacy Month even more impactful.
