Major shakeup in the parliament of St. Maarten.

~ Brison not re-elected~

PHILIPSBURG: --- Voters and residents of St. Maarten waited all night before they were able to get the outcome of the parliamentary elections held on Thursday, January 11th, 2024.
The Voting Bureau in collaboration with the Department of Communications began announcing the results just about midnight on Thursday which lasted until after 5 am Friday.
Of the eight political parties that contested the elections, six of them were elected to the parliament of St. Maarten.
Those that were elected are the National Alliance with 4 seats compared to 6 seats in 2020. Members of Parliament Elect on the NA slate are Egbert Jurendy Doran, the highest vote-getter with 539 votes on the NA slate, Silveria Jacobs with 469, Cloyd Ohndhae Marlin with 406, and Ardwell Irion with 333.
The United Peoples Party received 3 seats compared to 4 in 2020, Deputy Leader Omar Ottley came out as the highest vote-getter overall with 775 votes, Akeem Arrindell with 355 votes, and Francisco Lacroes with 312 votes. Also elected are two candidates from the NOW, its leader Christopher Emmanuel with 457 votes, and Kevin Maingrette with 249 votes.
The leader of the United Peoples Party Rolando Brison, the only member of parliament who performed exceedingly well in parliament by writing 23 laws was not re-elected. Brison received 256 votes.
Elected back to the Parliament of St. Maarten is Doctor Luc Mercelina who headed his political party, the URSM. The URSM received 2 seats Luc Mercelina with 704 votes and Attorney Sjamira Roseburg 248 votes.
Returning to the Parliament of St. Maarten is the Democratic Party with two seats. Party leader Sarah Wescott Williams maintained leadership of her party; she obtained 502 votes while Grisha Heyliger Marten received 423 votes.
The PFP is also returning to parliament however Raeyhon Peterson was not re-elected while the party leader got less votes than Ludmilla De Weever, De Weever obtained 576 votes while party leader Melissa Gumbs received 462 votes.while Peterson received 257 votes.
The one-man party the ECE with Nigel Wigley received 291 votes, not enough to grant him a seat in parliament. The United St. Maarten Party received 689 votes also not enough to hold a seat in parliament.

Also not re-elected is the Minister of Justice Anna Richardson on the NA slate, she received 214 votes. New comer to politics Darryl Yorn received 293, and Charlon Pompier with 176. Angelique Roumou received 150 while the Minister of VSA Rodolphe Samuel received 162.Suspended member of parliament Claudius Buncamper who ran on the NOW slate was not reelected he received 116 votes.
