“Reckoning with Sint Maarten Colonial Slavery Past in the Kingdom of the Netherlands: Enslavement, Hope, Reparatory Justice.”
PHILIPSBURG:--- This project was made possible, in part, by the Fund for Cultural Participation Foundation, The Netherlands.
The project aims to “encourage cultural participation and cultural education activities that contribute to commemorating and celebrating the abolition of slavery in the Kingdom, as well as increasing knowledge and awareness of the history of slavery and its repercussions that continue to affect the present” - particularly to Sint Maarten.
To this end, SIPPS will be organizing and holding a series of insightful public participation dialogues/ discussions on the Dutch colonial slavery past. To include:
1) Tracing the origins of our [Sint Maarten] enslaved ancestors.
2) The then “slave economic base” of Sint Maarten and the role it played in the emergence of the Dutch enslaved economic empire.
3) The abolition of slavery in the Kingdom and emancipation: Effects, Impact and Outcomes/ repercussions.
4) Is Reparatory Justice Warranted? Should the Dutch pay slavery reparation? Going forward in which a lasting connection is created (in the Kingdom).
The project concludes with a town hall presentation and exhibition commemorating/ reckoning (viewing) Sint Maarten colonial slavery past in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
