Brison condemns budget cut for Island’s only transitional home.

rolandobrison24072024PHILIPSBURG;--- UP Candidate Rolando Brison on Monday expressed grave concern and disapproval over the recent decision by the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor (VSA) to cut the budget for the Dr. J Foundation, which manages the only transitional shelter on St. Maarten.

A transitional home, such as the one operated by the Dr. J Foundation, provides temporary housing for individuals who are homeless due to dire situations. This shelter typically allows residents to stay for a month with the intention that they find more permanent accommodation during that time. “Since 2018, the Dr. J Foundation has been a crucial support system for our community, providing a safe haven for those needing immediate shelter,” Brison said.

"Cutting such an important social service, especially during hurricane season, is the last thing we should consider. It will lead to an increase in homelessness in our country. The transitional home is a vital part of our social safety net, and its absence will leave many without a place to turn in times of urgent need."

Brison stressed that the government should not unilaterally cut budget items, especially those already allocated to specific organizations. According to the 'compabiliteitslandsverordening,' such amendments can only be made by Parliament. The latest approved budget states funds should go to the Dr. J Foundation. This decision by the Ministry of VSA undermines the proper legislative process and sets a dangerous precedent."

As an alternative, Brison suggested that the Ministry of VSA and all other ministries consider cutting budgets for projects that have not started. “Many such projects within the budget can be reviewed and adjusted. However, an essential program like the transitional shelter, which has been in place for years and serves a critical role in our society, should not be where cuts are made."

Brison calls on the government to reconsider this decision urgently and to seek alternative solutions that do not compromise the welfare of St. Maarten's most vulnerable citizens. "We must prioritize the well-being of our people, especially during times of crisis. The transitional home has been essential for many, and its closure would be a tragic setback for our community,” he concluded.
