US Consulate of Curacao issues advisory to its citizens travelling to St. Maarten. (UPDATED))

~Validity of the alert now being questioned~

WILLEMSTAD/PHILIPSBURG:--- The US Consulate General of Curacao advised its citizens traveling to St. Maarten on Wednesday evening on the rise in crime on St. Maarten. The advisory addresses the rise in criminal activity, and travelers should exercise caution, particularly in the Dutch Quarter, where most of the violence has been reported.
The US Consulate General also advises its citizens to be mindful of possible political demonstrations in relation to the August 19th parliamentary snap elections.

Noteworthy to mention is the alert that has been circulating on social media has not been published on the US Consulate Website. The last alert on St. Maarten was on June 27th, 2024, when the Consulate announced the power outages experienced on the island. https://cw.usconsulate.gov/alert/

The Minister of TEATT, Grisha Heyliger Marten, also did not say she was officially notified but stated in her press release that "reports" reaching her indicate that the consulate general would be notifying its citizens about the need to exercise increased vigilance while traveling to Sint Maarten.
