PHILIPSBURG:--- On Wednesday, August 8, 2024, at approximately 9:10 PM, officers from the Sint Maarten Police Force (KPSM) conducted a targeted control operation in the Dutch Quarter/Belvedere area at the Tata Roundabout. This operation is part of an ongoing initiative, authorized by the Prosecutor’s Office, aimed at enhancing public safety through the exercise of stop-and-search powers granted to KPSM officers.
During the course of the operation, officers stopped a vehicle driven by a female individual. Upon interacting with the driver, she voluntarily disclosed that she was in possession of a firearm. The officers promptly located the firearm within the vehicle, and the driver was immediately placed under arrest. She has been transported to the police station, where she remains in custody pending further investigation.
In addition to the firearm, several other weapons and drug paraphernalia were discovered and confiscated during the control operation. The seizure of these items underscores the ongoing concerns related to illegal weapons and drug-related activities in the community.
Citizens are reminded that it is illegal to carry or possess a firearm without the appropriate authorization. Plans are underway to launch a firearms amnesty program in the near future, allowing individuals to surrender their firearms without facing charges related to possession. However, it is important to note that this amnesty does not extend to firearms involved in criminal activities.
As a country, it is imperative that we reject violence as a means of resolving conflicts. There are lawful and peaceful avenues available to seek justice.
