Lower Prince’s Quarter, Sint Maarten – September 4, 2024 – Lindell Wilson has unveiled an urgent and ambitious initiative to overhaul the island’s educational system. This comprehensive reform plan aims to tackle the significant challenges faced by schools and pave the way for a brighter future for students and teachers.

Current Challenges

The Foundation Based Education (FBE) policy, which governs primary education, includes an exit examination assessing students in key subjects. However, schools are grappling with outdated infrastructure, inadequate resources for teachers, and safety concerns for students. These issues demand immediate attention to prevent further detriment to the quality of education.

Key Reforms

    • Inclusive Approach: Engaging teachers from both public and private sectors to ensure practical solutions.
    • Infrastructure Improvements: Upgrading school facilities, including classrooms and outdoor learning spaces.
    • Teacher Support: Providing resources, professional development, and better teacher working conditions.
  2. Safety and Transportation:
    • School Bus Terminals: Establishing centralized bus terminals in various districts to reduce traffic congestion and ensure student safety.
    • Police Assistance: Collaborating with the Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) to ensure safety during school hours and at bus stops.
  3. Funding the Reforms:
    • Draft Law Initiative: Introducing an environmental tax on airlines, with revenue allocated to educational improvements and green initiatives at Princess Juliana International Airport.

Community Involvement:

Lindell calls on all community members to provide input and feedback on these proposals. This collaborative effort is crucial to creating a sustainable and prosperous future for Sint Maarten’s education system. The urgency of these reforms cannot be overstated, as the future of our students and the quality of education they receive are at stake.
