As September Ends, KPSM Reminds Public of Domestic Violence Observance and the Need for Accountability and Help.

domesticviolence26092024PHILIPSBURG:--- As we near the end of September, the Sint Maarten Police Force (KPSM) wants to remind the community of the critical importance of addressing domestic violence. While efforts to raise awareness are ongoing, domestic violence remains a serious issue that has deep and lasting impacts on individuals and families.

Domestic violence affects not only the victims but also children, relatives, and the wider community. KPSM continues to emphasize that victims should seek help immediately and perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions. It is equally important for perpetrators to seek help and change their behavior to break the cycle of violence.

KPSM takes all reports of domestic violence seriously. Perpetrators of abuse will face legal consequences as part of our commitment to ensuring the safety and justice of victims.

However, KPSM also recognizes that domestic violence is often rooted in underlying behavioral issues such as anger, control and unhealthy relationship dynamics. Punishment alone is not enough to stop the cycle of abuse. KPSM encourages those who have engaged in abusive behavior to seek professional help and therapy to address the root causes of their actions and make positive changes in their lives.

For perpetrators who want to take responsibility and stop their abusive behavior, there are resources available to provide guidance and support:

Behavioral Therapy

Anger Management Programs

Court-Mandated Support: Those involved in the judicial process may be required to participate in rehabilitation programs as part of their legal consequences.

Victims of domestic violence need support now more than ever. If you are experiencing abuse or know someone who is, it is vital to reach out for help. You don’t have to suffer in silence. Several organizations on Sint Maarten offer immediate assistance and long-term support:

Safe Haven Foundation: Contact: +1 (721) 523-6400

Women’s Desk: Contact: +1 (721) 520-6291

Mental Health Foundation: Contact: +1 (721) 542-1677

The fight against domestic violence continues every day. KPSM remains dedicated to protecting victims and ensuring that all perpetrators are held accountable under the law. More importantly, we urge everyone in our community—whether a victim, a family member, or even a perpetrator—to take action. Seek help, offer support, or make a commitment to change.

If you are in immediate danger, please don’t hesitate to contact the police by calling 911. You can also reach out to the organizations listed above.

Domestic violence can be prevented, and with your help, we can make a difference.
