MP Ottley Urges the Minister of TEATT to Urgently Address the Concerns Over Online ED Card System Amid Numerous Complaints; Calls for Reassessment as Busy Tourist Season Begins.

omarecottley28122023PHILIPSBURG:--- Member of Parliament Omar Ottley has expressed serious concerns over the recently launched online Embarkation and Disembarkation (ED) Card system, which has faced numerous complaints on social media, particularly Facebook, regarding its cumbersome and inefficient process. MP Ottley urged the government to reconsider making the digital ED card mandatory and efficiently phase it in. The ED Card system required mass promotion, especially as the busy tourist season begins. To announce a significant request to travelers just a few weeks before implementation is unacceptable for travelers and the tourism sector alike.

While the digital ED Card was introduced to improve entry procedures, MP Ottley noted that it had not achieved the expected results. "Instead of a streamlined experience, visitors are encountering frustrations with a lengthy and complicated system. As our peak tourist season is now underway. "We cannot afford to create delays or inconvenience during such a critical period for our economy."

The MP also pointed out that, under current law, travelers should still have the option to complete the ED card onboard or upon arrival, yet the new digital version is mandated before boarding. He called on the relevant ministers to clarify the legal basis for this mandatory online requirement and ensure that the system aligns with the law while being adaptable to travelers' needs.
