This week we are celebrating 'Statia Day Week.' It is a week of celebration and fun and there are several events and festivities planned during this time. Unfortunately, rules and responsibilities are sometimes forgotten during these festive activities.
The week began on Tuesday, the 12th of November, with a “Gospel Night” on the Fort Oranjestraat. Police had to address a driver who had parked his car behind a barricade. A number of other vehicles were also observed parked improperly along the road but were not a nuisance to traffic. In addition, the driver of a scooter was fined for not wearing a helmet and not being able to show a valid driver's license. When an officer spoke to him, he was disrespectful. He was given the opportunity to show a valid driver's license at the police station, but did not show up and was fined.
The second night “The Culture Night” event was crowded with parents along with their children, but also went quietly without any significant incident.
The police will be visible and present these days as much as possible to maintain order and provide assistance where needed. If persons are disturbing the public order or are guilty of offenses, each report will be examined to see what offense is involved and what the best solution is, with mutual respect. Verbal violence or aggression against police officers will not be tolerated under any circumstances, nor will it obstruct police and/or other emergency workers in their duties.
KPCN also wanted to emphasize the importance of using reusable cups for drinking instead of glasses or bottles, as this will prevent dangerous situations. Do not drive while drinking; make an appointment to be taken home. Considering being away from home for a long period of time, it is desirable to lock up your home properly and make sure it is well-lit when you leave. Park your car in a safe place, but not behind barricades or in places where you will cause a nuisance. Follow the designated routes/diversions, and do not move the barricades and/or signs indicating them. Do not leave valuables in the car.
In addition, an urgent request to comply with any police demands. This will allow for safe and responsible celebrations.
The Dutch Caribbean Police Force wishes everyone a happy 'Statia Day Week'.
