PHILIPSBURG:--- On January 14, during a budget meeting, Member of Parliament Lyndon Lewis called on the government to take decisive action to address the longstanding issue of unpaid salaries owed to justice workers. Stressing the importance of national safety and security, MP Lewis emphasized that the 44+ million guilders owed to these dedicated workers must be included in the 2025 national budget.
“The safety and security of our country should be our utmost priority,” stated MP Lewis. “Justice workers, including law enforcement officers, play a critical role in maintaining order and protecting our society. Yet, many of them are forced to purchase their uniforms, shoes, and essential equipment while waiting for overdue payments. This is unacceptable and unsustainable.”
MP Lewis highlighted the personal sacrifices justice workers continue to make, such as working weekends and forgoing much-needed time off, all while dealing with the financial strain caused by the unpaid salaries.
“As a justice worker on a leave of absence, I understand the toll this situation takes on my colleagues. It is unacceptable for their hard-earned money to be withheld year after year,” MP Lewis continued.
He urged the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Justice to prioritize the repayment of these funds in full and without unnecessary delay. “Leadership may change, and ministers may have different approaches to their ministries, but this issue has dragged on for too long. It is time for this government to act swiftly and decisively to clear this debt. Justice workers deserve compensation for their hard work and dedication to our nation’s safety.”
MP Lewis concluded by calling on the government to demonstrate its commitment to justice workers through immediate action. “Let us prioritize the payment of this debt and show our justice workers the respect and support they deserve. Their well-being is tied directly to the security and stability of Sint Maarten.”
