MP Darryl York’s Stance on Cannabis Legislation: Addressing Societal Challenges Before Legalization

darrylyork21012025PHILIPSBURG:--- During the 2025 budget discussions, MP Darryl York shared a measured view on the proposed cannabis legislation. While acknowledging its potential to generate revenue, he stressed the need to address pressing societal challenges first. “I’m not against it; I’m actually for it in the sense that it can bring funds to the coffers as well,” he said but noted the focus on financial gains had overshadowed the broader social impact of the legalization.
York raised concerns about the growing prevalence of students attending school under the influence of drugs and the increased access to firearms among youth. He warned that without safeguards, cannabis legalization could worsen these issues.
While some argued cannabis revenue could support education and youth programs, York criticized relying on potential future funds to solve current problems. “If we can find funding for events like Soul Beach, we shouldn’t need to rely on cannabis revenue to fix problems in our schools,” he said, urging immediate investment in education, public safety, and youth development.
He also called for thorough research and impact studies to guide data-driven decisions on cannabis legislation. Additionally, York highlighted the lack of resources within the justice system, questioning how policies like sobriety tests could be enforced effectively with current limitations that the justice ministry current faces.
The MP urged the Prime Minister and other leaders to address systemic issues in education, justice, and youth welfare before moving forward with legalization. “With the current state of our society, I can already say how I’ll vote when this legislation comes to Parliament without addressing these concerns,” he stated.
His stance underscores the need to prioritize social challenges and ensure comprehensive planning before implementing cannabis legislation.
