The girlfriend of Murder Victim Denzil Skeet and his father Wesley Skeet.
Three young children are left fatherless.
Denzil Skeet is the father of three little girls, ages three years, 18 months, and a one-month-old baby. He was the breadwinner of his family and never depended on anyone to take care of them.
Wesley Skeet said his son was born and raised in Guyana and attended school there. He said Denzil is a high school graduate. He made clear that his son was not a delinquent and that he came to St. Maarten in 2016 and worked with him in the construction field. Skeet said some people say his son grew up in St. Lucia. He made clear that his son never set foot in St. Lucia, and he does not even have relatives living there. “If people want to know, they can ask me. Denzil's mother passed away when he was just one year old, and I raised my son and brought him to St. Maarten as I am a long-time resident here. I had no plans to bury my son because parents normally don’t have to burry their children, it is the other way around.” Wesley Skeet said that based on his knowledge, his son is not involved in any criminal activities. While he will not swear for his dead son, he wants anyone who knows anything about what led to the shooting of his son to approach him because he wants to know why they shot and killed his son, knowing he has three young children.
Incident in September 2024.
The older Skeet, who was in Guyana for medical purposes, said that four young men who were driving in Cape Bay in September 2024 gun butted his son, his son had to seek treatment at the St. Maarten Medical Center, and on that same day, he and his children mother filed an official complaint with the police. Still, the police in St. Maarten did nothing, even though they have video footage and other evidence.
Skeet and his daughter in law identified as Marie, said that Denzil and his girlfriend were driving out of Cape Bay when a jeep with four young men that were armed asked him to get off the road since they did not want to scratch their jeep; the bereaved family said that Denzil could not get off the road further on the side so he reversed this vehicle so that the jeep with the four young men could pass. However, when Denzil Skeet stopped his car where he was living, the four young men got out of their vehicle and gun-butted him.
“My question to the St. Maarten police and Prosecutor's Office is why they did not pursue the investigation because the police have everything they needed to locate and arrest the four young men. They even have the license plate number for the jeep they were driving. If they were interested in finding these young men, they would have looked for the jeep owner who would have had to lead police to the young men.” Skeet said that would have been proper police work, but because the police did nothing, his son is dead today.
Incident on Sunday, January 26th, 2025.
The girlfriend of the victim, identified only as Marie, said that on Saturday, the young man who shot her boyfriend and children's father was in their area. He even asked her mother if she had seen police in Cape Bay and the woman told him she did not, On Saturday the now suspected killer left the area but returned early Sunday morning.
“I was washing dishes on Sunday morning, and Denzil was smoking in front of my apartment door, and suddenly the young man walked up to him and asked him why he was looking at him; Denzil told him he was not looking at him, and he also did not see anything. I pleaded with the young man not to shoot my boyfriend because we have three young children. While this happened, my 18-month-old daughter ran before her father. The shooter hesitated while holding the gun towards Denzil, but then he left. A while later, Denzil and I walked down the road, and the young man was there. Again, he began arguing with Denzil and held his gun up. Denzil pleaded with him, and I pleaded with him. We even told him that we did not know him and had no problems with him, and that was when he said that Denzil had problems with his partner, referring to the September 2024 incident when they gun-butted Denzil.”
The young mother said when the young man shot Denzil, they both tried to run away, but the shooter fired three shots and hit Denzil. She explained that Denzil fell as he was trying to escape from the gunman, and she also fell on top of Denzil and the gunman attempted to shoot her also, but Denzil pushed her away, and he took the third shot also.
The young mother described her children's father as a family man since he only goes out with her and their children. She said the only time Denzil leaves the house alone is when he leaves for work since he is a construction worker. “Denzil was a good provider for his three children. I also work, but my salary is nothing; my daughter's school fees are $550 monthly, and imagine I am taking home less than $500 every two weeks.” The young mother of the three fatherless children said she does not know how she will take care of her three daughters because her father-in-law only recently returned from Guyana, where he had two major surgeries. The young mother said that Denzil and her were busy planning their wedding for July 2025.
Wesley Skeet said that his son is a good provider; he works nonstop to provide for his family, and even though they live in Cape Bay with three young children, he said his son never approached him for any financial assistance. He pleads with the police and the justice chain to find the killer because he wants to know what his son did to deserve death.
