PHILIPSBURG;--- As Leader of the United People’s Party, I wish to address the people of St. Maarten not just as a Member of Parliament but as a citizen who shares your hopes, your concerns, and your unwavering belief in a better tomorrow for our beloved island.
In recent years, it has become clear to the board of the UP Party and myself that while our mission remains noble and our intentions pure, the path forward has not been without obstacles—some of which are rooted in perception and others, unfortunately, in sustained attacks designed to undermine the growth and potential of this organization.
Let me be clear: the UP Party was founded on the principles of service, progress, and people first. We remain deeply committed to reshaping and improving St. Maarten’s political and social landscape in the interest of all its people. However, we acknowledge that the party has, over time, carried a stigma—fuelled by consistent narratives from detractors who fear our potential and the powerful vision we hold for this country.
PHILIPSBURG:--- While we are not here to point fingers or dwell in the past, we cannot ignore the fact that image matters in politics. It is the bridge between leadership and public trust. And if we are to rise to our calling—to lead St. Maarten into a more stable, fair, and prosperous future—we must first begin by looking inward.
To this end, the United People’s Party has begun the process of strategic, structural, and organizational realignment. This is not about casting blame. It is about reaffirming our commitment to excellence, transparency, and service. It is about bringing forward a refreshed, refined, and focused team of individuals whose passion for St. Maarten is matched by their integrity, capability, and vision.
Our people deserve representatives they can rally behind—leaders whose presence inspires confidence and whose record reflects service. While every party has its share of trials and criticisms, the UP Party will not shy away from the work needed to rebuild stronger than ever before.
We hear you. We have listened. And we are acting.
Let me also speak to the many supporters who have hesitated to stand with UP openly, fearing the mudslinging and character attacks that have unfortunately become too common in our political landscape. Your silence does not go unnoticed, and your quiet loyalty is appreciated. I ask you now—stand with UP. We will continue this journey together, not as individuals, but as a movement for good governance, real representation, and results that matter.
The road ahead will not be without challenges. But through continued service and representation of you, the people, in Parliament, the dedication of our board, and the courage of candidates who remain faithful to the vision of the New UP Party, we will begin our preparation now—not for survival, but for victory. Victory not just at the polls but in restoring faith in what politics can and should be: a tool for national upliftment.
This is our moment to reset, refocus, and rise. With your support, we will.
Sincerely,
Omar E.C. Ottley
