Opposition MPs Request Urgent Public Meeting with Finance Minister on Critical Financial Matters.

requestforovminfin22092025PHILIPSBURG:---  A coalition of Parliament members from the National Alliance (NA) and the United People's Party (UPP) has formally requested an urgent public meeting with the Minister of Finance, Ms. Marinka Gumbs. The request, submitted in a letter dated September 22, 2025, to the President of Parliament, Sarah Wescot-Williams, calls for immediate and transparent discussions on several issues described as being of "critical importance to the country."

The official request was submitted to the Parliament of Sint Maarten, was formally received, and on the same day. The letter invokes Article 33 of the Rules of Order of Parliament to convene the meeting. The signatories emphasize that the topics directly affect the financial stability, public confidence, and economic future of Sint Maarten, requiring open debate before Parliament.

The proposed agenda focuses on four key areas of national concern:

  1. Issues surrounding the Central Bank of CuraƧao and Sint Maarten (CBCS): The letter seeks to address overarching challenges and developments related to the shared central bank.
  2. The recent nomination of the Chairman of the CBCS: The MPs are calling for a discussion on the Council of Ministers' recent nomination for this key leadership position within the monetary union.
  3. An update on the ENNIA situation: The ongoing resolution of the ENNIA insurance group remains a significant point of interest, and the members are requesting a status update.
  4. Developments concerning Mullet Bay: The letter highlights the need for discussion on the latest developments surrounding the valuable Mullet Bay property.

The formal request underscores a united front from several parliamentarians. The letter carries the handwritten signatures of five Members of Parliament: Egbert J. Doran, Omar Ottley, Ardwell Irion, Francisco Lacroes, and Darryl York. Their collective action signals a significant push for accountability and transparency from the government on these pressing financial and economic issues. Notably absent as a signatory is NOW MP Lyndon Lewis, who, despite sitting on the opposition benches, did not add his signature to the letter.

Adding to the urgency of the request is the fact that the Chair of Parliament will be off the island as of  Tuesday, which may impact the scheduling or handling of the proposed public meeting. Additionally, several faction leaders of Parliament are expected to be off island to attend the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO), further complicating timely deliberation on these critical issues. However, it is understood that the Urgent Meeting will be called when all Members of Parliament return to Sint Maarten.
