PHILIPSBURG:--- Authorities are actively investigating a vehicle hijacking that began on Down Street, Philipsburg, and led to a multi-vehicle collision and a major police response on A.T. Illidge Road. One suspect is in custody, but the gunmen and the stolen vehicle have not yet been located.
The incident unfolded when gunmen targeted a driver on Down Street, involving two vehicles in the initial confrontation. One of the drivers managed to escape the scene, speeding towards A.T. Illidge Road in an attempt to get away.
During the frantic escape, the driver’s vehicle collided with several other cars, causing significant disruption and damage along the busy thoroughfare. Police were quick to respond to the chaotic scene. Officers successfully apprehended one suspect in the vicinity of the collisions on A.T. Illidge Road.
In response to the incident and to facilitate the investigation, law enforcement officials have completely blocked off A.T. Illidge Road where the arrest was made. The area remains closed to traffic as forensic teams and detectives gather evidence.
The search continues for the other individuals involved in the hijacking and the stolen vehicle.
KPSM (Sint Maarten Police Force) Spokesman Joe Josepha confirmed that the investigation is in its early stages. "The investigation is ongoing," Josepha stated, declining to provide further details to protect the integrity of the police operation.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident, the whereabouts of the hijacked vehicle, or the remaining suspects to come forward.
