PHILIPSBURG:--- Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Melissa Gumbs announced Wednesday morning that Charlotte Brookson Academy for the Performing Arts was closed for the day as a precautionary measure after a student tested positive for COVID-19.
The closure also followed reports that other students and teachers had begun experiencing flu-like symptoms.
Gumbs said she received a telephone call at about 6:30 a.m. from Charlotte Brookson Academy Director Silveria Jacobs, who told her about the positive case and additional reports of illness within the school community.
Jacobs, acting as the competent authority for the school, subsequently decided to close the institution for the day. The closure will allow for a thorough cleaning and sanitization of the school premises before students and staff return.
The measure was taken as a precaution to protect the health and safety of students, teachers and other members of the school community. No additional information was provided regarding the number of individuals experiencing symptoms or when regular classes are expected to resume.
