BONAIRE:--- Mr. James Finies, leader of Partido Pueblo Progresivo (PPP), is calling for clear answers about the latest official delegation traveling to the Netherlands, including Commissioner Dennis Martinus, who announced the visit in the media. PPP wants to know what concrete results the visit will deliver on poverty, electricity costs, food prices, housing, and opportunities for Bonaire’s people.
After more than ten years of meetings, where are the results? - Bonaire’s governmental and political representatives have participated in VNG congresses in the Netherlands over a period spanning more than ten years. Finies questions what these repeated visits have delivered for ordinary Bonairians. In PPP’s assessment, successive leaders have returned with reports of meetings, contacts and promises, while too many families continue to struggle to meet their basic needs. Attendance at a congress cannot, by itself, be presented as an achievement. PPP believes leadership is measured by whether people’s lives improve. Every delegation should pursue clear priorities and return with concrete commitments, deadlines and an explanation of how the people of Bonaire will benefit.
Poverty and the cost of living - PPP says reducing poverty must be central to the delegation’s discussions. Families struggling to pay for food, rent and utilities need lasting solutions. Year after year, these difficulties remain on the agenda, but discussions must now translate into improvements that people can feel in their households.
Electricity and food prices - Electricity costs place a heavy burden on households and businesses, while expensive groceries leave families with less money for other necessities. PPP argues that allowing electricity tariffs to keep rising and then offering temporary relief is a failure of long-term governance. In Finies’s assessment, authorities cannot allow policies and structural failures to create hardship, then present short-term assistance as a political achievement for managing the very problem they helped create. This cycle leaves people struggling with their daily bills and waiting for the next intervention.
Bonaire needs a lasting plan for sustainable, reliable, and affordable electricity, with clear targets to reduce costs and protect households from repeated increases. Such a plan should give families financial stability, help businesses manage their expenses and improve people’s quality of life. PPP is asking what concrete commitments the delegation will secure on affordable energy and basic food prices, and when those commitments will produce lasting relief.
Housing and living conditions - Affordable housing and decent living conditions must be treated with the same urgency. Families should not have to spend an excessive share of their income simply to secure a home. PPP wants concrete action on housing availability, affordability and the conditions in which people live.
Our students in the Netherlands - Bonairian students studying in the Netherlands deserve meaningful engagement and practical support. Meetings with them should help shape policies on education, employment and opportunities to return home. PPP believes these encounters must extend beyond photographs and encouraging words. Students need a clear path to contribute their knowledge and skills to Bonaire’s development.
What will the delegation bring back? - Upon the delegation’s return, PPP is calling for a public account of the commitments secured, who will carry them out and when people can expect results. The people of Bonaire do not need another festival of words. They need results. After years of delegations and promises, our people deserve to know what will actually change in their daily lives. PPP emphasizes that engagement with the Netherlands must lead to meaningful improvements for Bonaire’s people.
The question is no longer how many meetings were held. The question is: what will change for the people of Bonaire?
