New Poverty Line among six pending matters listed by SER.

povertyline25102026PHILIPSBURG:---  The establishment of a new poverty line for Sint Maarten is among six pending advisory matters identified by the Social Economic Council (SER) in its 2025 Annual Report.

The disclosure places how poverty is measured among the policy questions awaiting the Council’s advice.

Other pending matters include proposed amendments concerning corporate income tax and the Code of Civil Procedure, according to the SER’s announcement of the report’s publication.

The press release does not identify all six matters or provide a timetable for completing the outstanding advice. It also does not disclose a proposed poverty threshold or the methodology under consideration.

The SER reported the pending matters alongside a year of increased advisory output. The SER completed 10 comprehensive reports in 2025 while addressing a backlog of legislative advice dating back to 2023.

Its completed work covered public transportation bus tariff adjustments, an early childhood development funding mechanism, the proposed Visitor’s Tax and health care reform.

Chairman Harlec G.F. Doran reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to cooperation with Government and Parliament, supported by independent research.
