St. Martin News Network - Four Arrested After Joint Investigation into Street Robberies --- Two detained in Guadeloupe Pending Trial.

Marigot:--- The Gendarmes have arrested four persons that are suspects in several street robberies. The culprits were looking mostly for gold items, the Gendarmes stated in a press release. The release further states that on August 8th, 2012 the suspects were arrested at their homes after the gendarmes had enough information on them operating as a team targeting people on the streets of St. Martin. The suspects were involved in at least 10 cases of street robberies, burglaries, and other drug offenses. At the end of the investigation, two of the three adult suspects were transferred to Guadeloupe where they were placed in detention pending their appearance before the criminal courts on September 4th, 2012. The minor suspect was placed in foster care in Guadeloupe while the fourth suspected will be summoned to appear in court on October 11th in St. Martin.

The arrest of these four suspects have brought the number to 22 arrests of persons who were involved in street robberies since the beginning of 2012. 21 of the arrests were made by the Gendarmerie while one of the suspects was arrested by a civil servant working for the police. "Even though the Gendarmerie has managed to arrest 22 persons who were menacing people by snatching their gold jewelry while they were on public domain, residents should avoid wearing conspicuous gold jewelry while walking on the streets since gold has a high market value at this time," the press release concluded.

US Imports Robbed at Gun Point --- Suspect on the Run.

On Saturday August 11th, 2012, an armed robbery took place at the US Imports supermarket. Details on the latest robbery on the French side of the island are not yet known. SMN News learnt that the gunman managed to rob the supermarket and escaped. The Gendarmerie is yet to release information on the robbery of US Imports.
