Principal of Prins Willem Alexander School called to Order --- Punishment Unconstitutional.

Philipsburg: --- The principal of Prins Willem Alexander School was ordered to lift her one week punishment levied on students and teachers of that school. SMN News learnt that the head of Public Education Gwendolyn Davis Holiday visited the school on Tuesday morning to meet with the management team of the school especially the principal who implemented a no break period of one week. SMN News has been reliably informed that the President of Windward Island Teachers Union Claire Elshot met with the department head when she was contacted by several teachers of the school. The source said Elshot wanted to visit her members on Tuesday morning but Davis Holiday brokered a deal with her by asking that she met with the management team first.
SMN News further learnt that the Principal and Management Team of Prins Willem Alexander School decided to punish the teachers and students of the school as of Monday. The actions of the school management took several teachers by surprise since it is unconstitutional of students not to have a break period. The law states that students must be given a 15-minute break period after every two hours and one hour break before afternoon classes commence.
According to well placed sources, the school management took actions to curb the unruly behavior of their students that would go through a broken fence into the neighbor's yard. One source at the school said the teachers were asked to come up with ideas as to how to better manage the students but before the teachers could give their opinion the school management took actions by imposing the no break period for one week.
President of the Windward Islands Teachers Union Claire Elshot confirmed that she met with Davis Holiday and her intention was to visit the school today. Elshot said she entered into an agreement with Davis Holiday when the department head instructed the Principal to lift the punishment she instituted on Monday. Elshot said government mainly the Minister of Education will have to find solutions for the problems the school is facing. "They need to understand that Prins Willem is a special education school and special measures have to be taken to curtail the unruly students. However, teachers cannot be punished for the students that need special care."
