Robbery Suspect Died as he wrestled with Victims --- Two Accomplices Escaped to the French side. (UPDATED)

michaelcarty29012014PHILIPSBURG:--- A young man who was among three men that broke into a home located at Oyster Pond Road #162 is now dead. Police Spokesman Ricardo Henson said in a press release on Tuesday January 28th, 2014 at approximately 3:10pm, several police patrols were sent to Oyster Pond Road #162 to investigate an ongoing robbery where one of the suspects was caught. On the scene the investigating officers encountered a family who is on vacation and staying at the residence where the ongoing robbery was taking place. The visitors told police that while at home they were suddenly confronted by three unknown men who were trying to break in to their residence. One of the suspects was caught and held for the arrival of the police. The visitors tied the suspect they caught as they waited for police to arrive at the scene. The victims further stated that the suspect in question started to resist heavily while the other two suspects tried to get him free by throwing stones at the victims, but they did not succeed. The suspect continued to resist heavily and the victims kept holding on to him.
Henson said when the two accomplices realized that they were not able to get their friend they jumped into a small white colored vehicle and fled towards the French side. The suspect that was caught stopped resisting after a while and remained lying on the ground. When the investigating officers checked the suspect he was not showing any signs of life. The paramedics were immediately informed and they went to the scene and tried to reanimate the suspect without success. Dr. Mercuur arrived on the scene and pronounced the death of the victim. At least three of the victims suffered minor cuts and bruises. They were treated on the scene by paramedics. The Detective Department and Forensic Department were immediately informed of the situation and they are currently investigating the death of the suspect at the scene where the attempted robbery and death of one of the suspects took place. The body of the victim has been confiscated to determine later what the exact cause of death was. The investigation is ongoing.
The young man that died during the robbery attempt has been identified as Michael Carty aka Jawz from French Quarter.

SMN News understands that an autopsy will take place on Thursday to determine the exact cause of death of the young man. It is also understood that the victims who are on St. Maarten on vacation are cooperating with the current investigation being carried out by KPSM.

Reliable sources say that the young man who is known to be among several other young men in French Quarter joined two of his friends and went to commit the robbery. It is not yet known if the Dutch side police (KPSM) has requested the assistance of the French Gendarmes to assist in the investigation and locate the other two persons that were allegedly with the late Michael Carty when they were caught in the act of burglarizing the home.
