PHILIPSBURG:--- A routine motorbike control in the Dutch Quarter area could have ended badly, on February Sunday 17th between the of 4:00 pm -9:00 pm; when for unknown reasons a passerby threw an unknown object at a police vehicle, breaking the rear back glass of the police patrol vehicle.
The patrol team had just pulled over a scooter for a routine control when an unknown object, which was turned out to be a rock, was thrown in the direction of the officers, hitting the glass of the patrol car causing it to break. Luckily no officers were injured on the scene.
The Sint Maarten Police Force would like to inform the community that this type of behavior will not be accepted and will not be taken lightly; this incident is currently under investigation in hopes to lead to the arrest of the person(s) involved. This person(s) will be prosecuted for this blatant disregard and disrespect for law enforcement.
During this particular control, 10 scooters were confiscated, 2 arrests were made and 7 persons received fines for various traffic violations. The Sint Maarten Police Force will continue to carry out these controls in order to ensure all drivers are following the laws of the roadways. We will not shy away from our scheduled controls based on this incident. The incident shows there is a need for the police force to increase the amount of controls done in order to ensure our communities remain safe.
