PHILIPSBURG (DCOMM):--- Thursday, October 15, 2026, marks Global Handwashing Day, and the Collective Prevention Service (CPS), an executive agency of the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor (Ministry of VSA), is calling on residents, schools, businesses and community organizations to recognize the importance of proper hand hygiene as one of the simplest and most effective measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
Global Handwashing Day forms part of CPS's annual calendar of health observances and provides an opportunity to reinforce public awareness about the importance of washing hands with soap and clean water to protect individual, family, and community health.
The 2026 observance is being promoted under the Global Handwashing Partnership's multi-year theme, “Be a Handwashing Hero!” The theme encourages people of all ages to advocate for good hand hygiene and lead by example at home, school, work, and in the community.
The Global Handwashing Partnership established Global Handwashing Day in 2008 to promote handwashing with soap as an affordable, accessible, and effective public health intervention that can help prevent illness and save lives.
CPS emphasizes that handwashing should not be viewed merely as a personal hygiene practice but as an important public health responsibility that helps reduce the transmission of infectious diseases throughout the community.
Handwashing with soap and water can help prevent about one in three diarrheal illnesses and one in five respiratory infections, including the common cold and influenza.
Many disease-causing germs spread when people touch contaminated surfaces, prepare or eat food with unwashed hands, or touch their eyes, nose, and mouth.
Germs can also be transmitted from person to person through everyday activities, including shaking hands, caring for someone who is ill, changing diapers, and handling commonly used objects.
Proper handwashing removes germs from hands and reduces the likelihood of spreading infections to others.
For Sint Maarten, where residents and visitors interact daily in schools, workplaces, public transportation, restaurants, tourism establishments and other public spaces, practicing good hand hygiene is an important part of maintaining a healthy community.
CPS reminds the public that regular handwashing can also help reduce absenteeism from schools and workplaces caused by preventable illnesses.
CPS encourages everyone to wash their hands regularly, especially when germs are most likely to spread.
These include: Before, during, and after preparing food. Before eating or handling food. After using the toilet. After changing diapers or assisting a child with toileting.
After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. Before and after caring for someone who is sick. Before and after treating a wound. After handling garbage. After touching animals, animal waste, or pet food. Whenever hands are visibly dirty.
Handwashing is especially important for persons working in food preparation, healthcare, childcare, hospitality, and other sectors where frequent contact with people or shared surfaces may increase opportunities for germs to spread.
While Global Handwashing Day is observed annually on October 15, CPS stresses that proper hand hygiene must remain a daily habit throughout the year.
CPS calls on the community to become handwashing heroes by practicing proper hand hygiene, teaching children the importance of clean hands, and helping to create healthier homes, schools, workplaces, and public spaces.
Clean hands protect lives. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, and make handwashing a healthy habit every day.
